Personalized Chinese Herbal Care for Adult and Teen Acne

Adult acne, hormonal breakouts, deep cystic acne and persistent pimples can be frustrating to manage, especially when you've tried multiple products and treatments without getting the results you want. Even when breakouts begin to improve, lingering dark spots and uneven skin tone can make it feel as though your skin never fully recovers.

Many people try cleansers, serums, prescriptions and facials, and still see breakouts return. Adult acne in particular can show up along the jaw, chin and cheeks, flare around your cycle, or stay stubborn for years. In Chinese medicine, these patterns are seen as signs of what is going on inside the body, such as heat, dampness, stress, digestion and hormonal shifts.

If you're struggling with stubborn, ongoing acne, Chinese herbal medicine offers an individualized approach that considers your skin alongside your overall health. Chinese herbal medicine for acne looks at what may be driving your breakouts, not only the pimples or cysts on your skin. Some breakouts that look like acne are something else, such as fungal acne, perioral dermatitis or rosacea. These have different needs. Read about fungal acne and Malassezia or perioral dermatitis.

I'm Juliette Aiyana, LAc., MTCM, a licensed Chinese medicine practitioner specializing in chronic, stubborn and difficult-to-resolve skin conditions. I've been practicing since 2001, and I work with adults, teens and children experiencing a range of dermatological concerns. I have specialized training in identifying and supporting skin conditions on diverse skin tones. Acne can leave dark marks that look different on brown and Black skin, and care should take that into account.

Through indivdualized Chinese herbal consultations, I look beyond the appearance of your pimples to understand your particular acne pattern, health history and factors that might contribute to recurring breakouts. My goal is to help you work toward clearer, healthier skin with care tailored to your individual needs.

All consultations are virtual online visits via Zoom so I can assist people anywhere in the US or Canada, with herbs and supplements shipped to your door. Book A Consultation Here.

Uniquely Designed Care for Different Types of Acne

Acne doesn't look or behave the same way in everyone. Your age, hormones, skin characteristics, health history and the type of breakouts you experience all matter when determining an appropriate approach. Two people with acne can receive very different herbal formulas. Herbs may be combined with simple diet and lifestyle changes that fit your life. We will also discuss and potentially change your skincare routine.

I work with people experiencing several forms of acne, including:

Adult Acne

Acne that develops or persists into adulthood can be especially frustrating when you thought you'd outgrown breakouts. Adult acne often affects the cheeks, chin and jawline, although breakouts also occur on the forehead, chest and back. Your consultation explores your acne history and factors associated with recurring inflammation.

Teen Acne

Adolescence brings hormonal changes that influence oil production and the development of acne. Persistent breakouts can affect confidence and leave lasting marks. Individualized care considers your teenager's skin, general health, daily habits and developmental stage.

Hormonal Acne

Breakouts that recur around menstruation or concentrate along the chin and jawline are often rooted in hormonal influences. Your health history, menstrual patterns when relevant, and other symptoms help inform your individualized assessment. Acne that begins suddenly or occurs alongside irregular periods or excess facial hair warrants medical evaluation for possible hormonal conditions. Chinese herbal medicine can work integratively.

Cystic and Deep Inflammatory Acne

Deep, painful bumps and nodules often take longer to resolve than superficial pimples. Severe inflammatory acne also carries a greater risk of permanent scarring. Personalized Chinese herbal care offers an additional approach to consider alongside appropriate dermatological care.

Acne On Skin of Color

I have specialized training in identifying and supporting skin conditions on diverse skin tones. Acne can leave dark marks that look different on brown and Black skin, and her care will take that into account. Read more about the trainings I have taken about working with clients with richly pigmented skin tones on my About Me page.

Persistent Acne That Hasn't Responded to Other Approaches

If you've tried multiple cleansers, topical products, prescription medications, dietary changes or supplements without satisfactory improvement, you might benefit from a fresh assessment of your skin and health history. We'll review what you've tried, how your skin responded and what factors deserve further attention.

Acne That Leaves Dark Spots

Acne can leave brown, red, gray-brown or darker patches after individual blemishes have healed. This is known as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH). These marks are especially noticeable on richly pigmented skin and often take longer to fade than the original breakout. My approach considers both active acne and the discoloration left behind. Read my blog post about Chinese herbs for acne post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

How Chinese Herbal Medicine Approaches Acne

Chinese herbal medicine has a long history of use for skin conditions, including acne. In traditional practice, herbal formulas are selected according to an individual's presentation rather than the appearance of a single blemish alone.

Depending on your assessment, your personalized formula might draw on traditional herbal strategies intended to address inflammatory eruptions, excess oiliness, recurring breakouts and other features of your skin condition.

As your skin changes, your herbal formula will need to change as well. The composition of the formula is reviewed according to your response, evolving symptoms and overall health.

My recommendations are based on your individual presentation and clinical judgment. I do not use a single formula for everyone with acne.

Chinese herbal medicine is an option to discuss as part of a broader care plan. Research on herbal approaches to acne is ongoing, and results vary. I do not promise a particular outcome or a specific timeline for improvement. In my clinical experience, I have been able to help most people who consult with me and they start to see changes within 4-12 weeks. There have been a handful of people who I have not been able to help.

A Personalized Approach to Your Skin and Overall Health

Your skin doesn't exist in isolation. During your consultation, I look at the broader picture of your health and how your symptoms fit together.

Your assessment might include:

  • Your acne history, including when breakouts began and how they have changed over time.

  • The location, appearance and severity of your breakouts.

  • Your history of skin care products, prescription medications, supplements and previous approaches.

  • Your digestion, sleep, stress levels and other relevant health concerns.

  • Menstrual patterns or other signs of hormonal changes, when applicable.

  • Your history of dark spots, scarring, skin sensitivity and reactions to products.

This information helps me develop a Chinese medicine assessment and determine whether personalized herbal care is appropriate for you.

I also consider practical aspects of your routine, including skin care habits and potential sources of irritation. My recommendations are designed around your individual circumstances rather than a one-size-fits-all plan.

Acne and Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation

For many people, the effects of acne extend beyond the active breakouts. Dark spots linger long after a pimple has flattened, leaving uneven coloration across the cheeks, forehead, chin or jawline.

Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation develops when inflammation stimulates excess pigment production. Picking or squeezing blemishes, irritating skin care products and repeated inflammation can worsen discoloration.

Skin tone matters, too. On richly pigmented skin, post-acne marks often appear brown or gray-brown and might take months to fade. In lighter skin tones, lingering marks might appear pink, red or purple, depending on the type of discoloration. Chinese herbal medicine can often prevent this from happening or speed up the time it take to fade.

My approach considers your active breakouts and the changes in skin color left behind. Recommendations are individualized according to your skin, its sensitivity and your history of irritation.

Daily broad-spectrum sunscreen is an important part of managing post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, especially when marks are exposed to sunlight. A gentle skin care routine also helps limit unnecessary irritation.

Persistent discoloration, depressed scars and raised scars require different approaches. During your consultation, we can discuss your concerns and determine whether additional dermatological or esthetic care is appropriate.

Frequently Asked Questions About Chinese Herbal Medicine for Acne

How long does Chinese herbal acne care take?

The time required varies according to the type and severity of acne, how long you've experienced breakouts and your individual response. Acne and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation also improve at different rates. We review your progress during follow-up consultations rather than relying on a fixed timeline.

Is Chinese herbal medicine appropriate for hormonal acne?

Chinese medicine assessment considers menstrual patterns and other relevant symptoms when developing an individualized formula. Persistent or sudden-onset acne accompanied by irregular periods, excess facial hair or other hormonal symptoms warrants evaluation by a medical professional.

Can Chinese herbal medicine help with cystic acne?

Chinese herbal care is an option to discuss for inflammatory acne, including deep, painful breakouts. Severe or nodular acne carries a risk of permanent scarring, so prompt dermatological care is important. Herbal consultations should not delay assessment or established treatments for severe acne.

Can you help with acne-related dark spots or scars?

Yes, we can discuss post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation as part of your overall skin concerns. Recommendations consider your skin tone, the nature of the discoloration and whether active acne continues to develop. Some marks fade slowly, some much more quickly. Established deep ice-pick scars require different care.

Do I need to stop my current acne medications?

No. Do not stop prescribed medication without discussing the change with your prescribing clinician. During your consultation, we'll review your current medications and supplements to assess whether Chinese herbs are appropriate and identify potential interactions.

Do you work with teenagers?

Yes, I work with teens as well as adults. Herbal recommendations for minors require careful consideration of age, health history, medications and safety. Parent or guardian involvement is arranged as appropriate.

Are consultations available online?

Yes. All consultations take place virtually via Zoom for people in the United States and Canada.
