If you've spent years managing eczema or another skin condition with topical steroids, and your skin is now angrier than ever, you may be experiencing topical steroid withdrawal. TSW is real, it is documented, and it is one of the most distressing things I see in my practice.

What I want to offer here is a different approach toward managing TSW. Not a quick fix, and not a promise, but a way of understanding what may be happening in your body, and what a supervised holistic herbal approach might look like.

What Chinese Medicine Sees

In Chinese medicine, the skin is not separate from the rest of you. When the skin flares, we read that as a sign of deeper imbalance, often involving heat, dampness, or a depleted system that has been suppressed rather than resolved.

Topical steroids work by suppressing the inflammatory response at the surface. From a Chinese medicine perspective, years of suppression may push that underlying pattern deeper into the body. In Chinese medicine we call this a lurking pathogen. When steroids are tapered or stopped, the lurking pathogen re-emerges, often more intensely than before.

A Chinese medicine practitioner is not considering at the rash alone when we put together a customized herbal formula for you. We are looking at sleep, digestion, stress, energy, the whole picture. That 90-minute initial consultation I provide exists for exactly this reason. We will take a deep dive into the entire picture of your health.

What an Herbal Approach May Look Like

Chinese herbal medicine for topical steroid withdrawal works by supporting the body's own processes, not by suppressing them. For skin conditions with a TSW component, an herbal care program typically runs around

6 -12 months depending on the current condition of of your skin. It is not a fast process, and I will always be honest with you about that. Most people I work with experiences changes within the first 6-10 weeks. The goal is to help the body find and resolve the root pattern, repair and restore the skin as well as possible, rather than to simply quiet the surface symptom again.

Herbal formulas are tailored to each person. What works for one patient's presentation may be completely different from what another needs, which is why a detailed consultation is the starting point, not a protocol off a shelf. Learn more about Chinese Medicine on my FAQ page.

A note on steroids and your prescribing physician

I want to be clear: decisions about tapering or stopping topical steroids belong to you and your prescribing physician. I work alongside your medical team, never in place of them. If you are considering changes to your steroid use, please do that in conversation with your doctor.

Next Steps

If this resonates with what you are experiencing, my Topical Steroid Withdrawal services page has more on how I approach these cases. When you feel ready, a consultation is the place to talk through the specifics of your situation.
